Data Ventures is working together with major telecommunication companies in New Zealand. Each provider gave Data Ventures access to an aggregated and anonymised sum total of mobile devices down to suburb in New Zealand, across different time periods.

From there, we use Stats NZ expertise to develop population estimates that represent not just the number of mobile devices, but all of New Zealand's population - including visiting, residing and population that don't own a mobile phone.

About our data: Our population estimates determine the number of people present in a given hour at an SA2 level (large neighbourhood). We derive this by first estimating the total number of people in New Zealand, which differs to normal population estimates which is typically only the usual residents at night and does not include visitors or returning residents. We can then distribute the total number of people at an SA2 level based on the total number of mobile devices present in the SA2 over an hour.
